Scottish Government Listening at Showcasing Scotland

SSA CEO Jimmy Buchan attended Showcasing Scotland last month and made the most of spending time amongst Scotland’s Government Ministers, including First Minister Humza Yousaf.

Environmental Rural Affairs Minister Mhairi Goujon and Trade and Business Secretary Richard Lochead were also in attendance.

The message Jimmy relayed was the same to all three Government figures: that businesses more than ever needs to be a key priority in growing our economy. That there are huge opportunities to sell Scottish goods and seafood, however businesses of all size need encouragement and assistance to get to market.

The First Minister was appreciative of Jimmy’s comments and admitted it is challenging but told Jimmy he hears the message loud and clear – and encouraged further communication on the matter.

Business is about people, and Scotland Food and Drink officials have excelled in providing first class venues and food for exhibitors – and more importantly buyers in attendance.

Last month’s gala event at the National Museum in Edinburgh was a moment of pride for this industry and Jimmy was keen to applaud the effort and thought that went into providing a great venue, great food and a pipe band to entertain visitors and delegates.

Jimmy was also delighted to note Aberdeenshire was well represented with a wide range of producers – it was good to share a platform with fellow food and drink businesses from the northeast.

Jimmy has since written to the First Minister in an official capacity regarding the need for further Scottish Government support within our industry.

We await his response.
