The CEO of the Scottish Seafood Association, Jimmy Buchan, today raises concerns on the escalating war of words on possible trade disruption between the UK and the EU.
“At a time of rising concerns over global economics, the last thing the seafood sector and our customers need is further turmoil. We already face challenges from fuel inflation, labour shortages and the aftermath of Covid and Brexit.
Further instability will only bring more harm to businesses and to the communities we serve.
We encourage calm and constructive thinking from all sides as we build back from a difficult period for seafood traders because this is a time to build food security, not food uncertainty.
The last few years have been a hugely challenging time for our seafood exporters. We are slowly recovering from these severe challenges. The threat of further delays or friction in getting our seafood to our customers is a backwards step in that recovery.
