On 11th February 2026, the Scottish Seafood Association (SSA) hosted representatives from the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) at ONE SeedPod in Aberdeen to discuss the newly agreed UK–India trade deal and its implications for Scotland’s seafood sector.
The session provided early insight into how the agreement could create new export pathways, including the potential integration of selected seafood products into tariff-free export routes. For Scotland’s seafood businesses, this represents a significant commercial opportunity within one of the world’s fastest-growing consumer markets.
However, beyond the headline trade provisions, the event demonstrated the wider value of constructive engagement between industry and government.
By convening UK Government officials, SSA members and wider seafood stakeholders in the same room, the session enabled open discussion on future market development, supply chain capacity, regulatory considerations and sector priorities. These conversations are essential to ensuring that trade agreements translate into tangible economic benefits for Scotland’s coastal communities.
SSA continues to play a critical role as a trusted conduit between policymakers and industry. Through its established network, operational insight and ability to bring together the right voices, the Association ensures that the practical realities of Scotland’s seafood supply chain are understood at government level.
As international trade relationships evolve, SSA remains committed to widening and deepening engagement with both the UK and Scottish Governments. Ensuring that Scotland’s seafood sector is positioned to benefit fully from emerging domestic and global opportunities will remain central to the Association’s work.
The UK–India trade agreement marks a positive step forward. With ambition, preparation and collaboration, Scotland’s seafood industry is well placed to explore the opportunities ahead.
